3D Printing Is Thriving
Thomas, a manager at RGF, a German professional printing service provider, said, "The development of 3D printing is full of energy and potential." He gave an example: "In the future, if a part of your refrigerator breaks, you might just need the manufacturer's data to print it yourself. This kind of scenario could be applied in many other areas as well."
In May 2014, Wohlers Associates, the most authoritative research organization in the 3D printing industry, released its annual Wohlers Report 2014. According to the report, the global 3D printing products and services market grew by 34.9% in 2013, reaching $3.07 billion. This marked the highest growth rate in the past 17 years, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 34.9%. From 2011 to 2013, the CAGR was 32.3%. In the 2013 report, Wohlers predicted that the 3D printing industry would surpass $5 billion in sales by 2017, maintaining a nearly 20% growth rate afterward. By 2021, the market is expected to reach nearly $11 billion (see Figure 1).

3D Printing Is Gaining Momentum in the German Printing Industry
This growing potential has not gone unnoticed by print service providers. Recently, the printing industry has started paying more attention to 3D printing. In May of this year, the Print-Cocktail event and Rapid.Tech + FabCon 3D Printing Exhibition were held in Erfurt, Germany. RGF, a print service provider, also launched the 3Dion initiative, which aims to promote 3D printing across different sectors.
3Dion is a neutral network connecting hardware and software manufacturers, distributors, service providers, and users. It includes printers, service providers, manufacturing engineers, technicians, tool builders, model builders, architects, funeral homes, dental labs, designers, opticians, advertising agencies, as well as hobbyists and 3D printing enthusiasts. The initiative targets both B2B and B2C markets.
Currently, around 300 companies in Germany offer 3D printing services. However, despite the rising demand, these companies may still struggle to meet the market needs. Many of them only have one or two 3D printers, indicating a lot of room for growth.
How Can Traditional Print Service Providers Enter the 3D Printing Market?
Traditional print service providers entering the 3D printing market typically focus on two main areas: B2B and B2C.
In the B2B segment, customers are commercial clients who have their own production capabilities but may face limitations in productivity or materials. These clients often turn to 3D printing service providers for support. On the B2C side, customers are individual consumers who own 3D printers at home. When they need high-quality prints or when their home printers fall short, they may seek help from 3D printing service providers.
As 3D printing continues to evolve, the opportunities for print service providers are expanding. Whether through collaboration, innovation, or customer education, the future of 3D printing looks promising for those willing to adapt and grow.
