Exclusive Interview With Staffan Tollgard

Exclusive Interview With Staffan Tollgard

Founded back in 2005, Tollgard Design Group provides an award-winning architectural interior design service tailored for discerning clients. Internationally renowned for its bold approach to residential interiors, the firm is celebrated for blending Asian and Scandinavian functionalism. This harmonious mix is enriched by a deep appreciation for furniture as both a functional and sculptural art form. Take a closer look at what makes them truly special!

“Tollgard Design Group is a creative and collaborative interior design studio and respected curator of international contemporary design. With three London showrooms and a dedicated commercial contracts team, our aim is to add value at every stage of a design journey: for our clients, for architects, for interior designers and for design aficionados around the world.” – Tollgard Design Group

Staffan Tollgard finds immense joy in the breadth and diversity of his work. He shared with us, “We’re meant to have endless knowledge across many fields—from art and culture to the finest furniture, lighting, and specialized materials. On top of that, there’s an understanding of construction regulations (CDM) and managing complex building sites. The learning never stops, which is wonderful but also humbling, even after nearly twenty years in the field.” His passion for constant growth shines through.

Early in his career, Staffan Tollgard faced "Imposter Syndrome," finding himself overwhelmed by the rapid pace of success. He reflected, “There wasn’t a quick fix to this; it took time to adjust. But ultimately, these experiences helped me feel more grounded in my role.” His journey from doubt to confidence is inspiring.

While Staffan Tollgard has achieved much, he remains open to new challenges. He joked, “My bucket list seems to grow faster than I can complete it. By the time I’m on my deathbed, it might be longer than it is now!” In the near future, Staffan and his wife, Monique, plan to spend three months each year living and working in different parts of the world—Vancouver, New York, Kyoto, and Florence among their destinations. He’s thrilled about this upcoming adventure, driven by his desire to make others feel good through interior design. “If they feel good, I feel good,” he stated simply yet profoundly.

PROJECTS

When it comes to engaging with his audience, Staffan explained that as a hybrid studio with multiple facets, they connect with different groups in unique ways. Their showrooms and contract division maintain ongoing conversations within the interior design community, ensuring they provide the perfect pieces for each project. Word-of-mouth referrals, partnerships with various trades, and repeat clients drive their business forward. Currently, Staffan is working on an exciting capsule collection of marble furniture, which he likes to call “functional sculptures.” Although still under wraps, he’s set to visit the prototypes soon and couldn’t be more enthusiastic about it. Stay tuned for more details!

“I’m allergic to the word trend, but I suppose it’s one way of discussing the state of our industry. It’s hard to pinpoint aesthetically, and I think that’s a good thing—it means there’s a lot happening. I’ve always been fascinated by rediscovering pieces from the mid-century era, especially those that were out of production for years. This has become a significant part of the furniture industry, with reissues launching all the time.” – Staffan Tollgard

When asked about his ideal client, Staffan explained that they come from all walks of life and are predominantly international. Looking ahead, he’s particularly excited about the marble project mentioned earlier, set to launch this fall. Additionally, he and Filippo, the studio’s design director, are in talks with several brands regarding future designs. Keep an eye on this space!

TO FINALISE

It’s impossible to discuss interior design without mentioning craftsmanship. Staffan emphasized that there’s incredible craftsmanship emerging from various corners of the globe. “I’d argue that Italy and Scandinavia have been the most interesting showcases of authentic craftsmanship and great design post-World War II. Today, however, you also see amazing work coming out of America, Portugal, and Asia.” When asked about the future of design, he said, “I think we’ll see two extremes: on a large scale, virtual reality (VR) will play a bigger role in creating and presenting interiors. On a smaller scale, there will be more opportunities for emerging designer-makers. Both macro and micro trends will shape the future.”
