Hi Doctor,

I’m a turkey farmer and run a large farm that specializes in breeding various types of poultry, including turkeys. Every Christmas, my turkeys sell out quickly at local farmers' markets. It’s always a busy time! But this year, I’d like to start selling them earlier—possibly in November. The issue is, I won’t know the exact size of each turkey until just before packaging. Could you help me figure out how best to package them?

Looking forward to your advice!

Kind regards,
Giles

Hi Giles,

It’s funny you should reach out now because I’ve been fielding a lot of questions lately about Christmas packaging solutions. Many businesses are eager to get ahead of the curve by launching their holiday offerings early. When it comes to packaging food items like turkeys, precision is key. You don’t want a box that’s too big (wasted space, potential for damage), nor one that’s too small (squeeze-fit issues). So, let’s break this down.

In my experience, using bags instead of boxes is often the better option for products like turkeys. Here’s why: white carrier bags, commonly found in supermarkets and butcher shops, are sturdy and eco-friendly due to their biodegradable additives. These bags are practical for immediate use, especially if customers plan to store the turkey directly in the fridge or freezer. On the other hand, if you’re looking for something a bit more polished, consider medium-duty polythene bags. They’re available in different sizes, offer excellent protection against dust and moisture, and can be easily sealed to fit each turkey snugly using cable ties or a heat sealer. Plus, they provide clear visibility, making your turkeys look great on the shelf.

However, if you still prefer boxes, I’d suggest opting for durable, double-walled boxes—like a 30 x 18 x 18-inch model with reinforced handles for easy lifting. This setup ensures your turkeys are secure during transport while maintaining enough space for the bagged turkeys inside.

Remember, clarity and convenience are essential when packaging perishable goods. Your customers will appreciate being able to handle the turkeys easily without taking up unnecessary space in their homes.

Wishing you a successful holiday season!

Best wishes,
