Packaging Takes Center Stage on the Airwaves
It's been a whirlwind week for those of us in the packaging world as our industry has been making waves on the radio! While it might sound surprising, packaging plays a pivotal role in addressing some of the major concerns facing society today. From business-to-business interactions to broader environmental considerations, packaging is at the heart of many discussions.
One of the most exciting developments came from our very own Managing Partner, Gavin Ashe, who appeared on BBC Coventry & Warwickshire earlier this week. Gavin discussed a recent fraud case involving Mellor and Anderson, two individuals who committed multiple offenses in 2012, including stealing over £3,000 worth of packaging goods from us back in May of that year. We were on the airwaves for the first time to shed light on the situation, and after a thorough investigation, we returned to the show to announce that the culprits had finally been sentenced. You can read more about the case in our official press release.
Annie Othen, the host of the show, did a fantastic job leading the conversation. She asked Gavin how this incident impacted our operations, and he explained that it has made us much more cautious when handling credit accounts and approving credit limits. As an employee-owned company, any fraud against us hits close to home, and we take such incidents personally. Naturally, we also expressed our gratitude to the BBC and Annie for helping to bring attention to the issue and pushing for justice.

On a larger scale, Radio 4’s “In Business†program, hosted by Peter Day, also delved into the packaging industry on Thursday, May 22nd. The episode focused on several pressing issues within the sector, particularly concerning environmental sustainability. Despite frequent criticism regarding excessive waste, the program provided a balanced perspective, highlighting how companies are innovating to develop more eco-friendly solutions.
Peter visited Robert Opie, founder of Brands, Packaging and Advertising, to trace the origins of modern branding back to the Victorian era when mass production began. Manufacturers realized they needed to control their products better and appeal directly to consumers, leading to the rise of individualized packaging. This evolution allowed food items to be sold pre-packaged, eliminating contamination risks.
The program also explored contemporary advancements in packaging technology during a visit to the Benson Group, a leading supplier of cartons for the food industry. Speaking with Marketing Manager Helen, they discussed how packaging accounts for approximately 10% of a product’s overall carbon footprint. By optimizing packaging design, manufacturers aim not only to reduce this percentage but also enhance protection for the remaining 90%. Helen emphasized the importance of utilizing resources efficiently to minimize waste.
Lisa Carroll, Director of Technology at Rexam, talked about cutting-edge developments in aluminum packaging, including work on an innovative aluminum bottle requiring four times more steps than traditional can production. Such projects exemplify how technological breakthroughs contribute toward creating greener alternatives. For instance, last year Rexam managed to shave off 0.1 grams per can, resulting in savings of 6,000 tons annually—a testament to how seemingly minor adjustments can yield significant results.
Consumer habits significantly influence packaging trends too. With recycling programs now standard across councils, six out of ten cans get recycled yearly. Moreover, buyers increasingly factor environmental impact into purchasing decisions. According to Grant Montague from Perception Research Services, although people claim indifference toward packaging aesthetics, subconsciously they value reliability and security. Overpackaging draws criticism; however, insufficient safeguards deter potential customers.
These shifts resonate deeply within Kite Packaging as well. We’ve focused on enhancing specific product lines through minor tweaks aimed at improving ecological performance. For example, we eliminated cardboard cores from our pallet wraps, downsized tape cores by 60% to create Envirotape, and replaced double-wall cardboard with stronger single-wall variants for our Enviroboxes.
