2014 building materials home industry scale or more than 400 billion

On June 10, 2014, the first *China Building Materials and Home Industry Development Report* was officially launched at the inaugural China Building Materials and Home Industry Development Conference held in Beijing. This marked a significant milestone as it was the first comprehensive statistical report, analysis, and forecast on the industry following the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the China Building Decoration Association. The report holds great importance, offering scientific insights and theoretical support for government departments in shaping industrial policies. It also serves as a valuable resource for companies to guide their research strategies and market expansion plans. As a national-level association under the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, the China Building Decoration Association plays a vital role in leading, promoting, standardizing, and supporting the industry. Given the diverse nature of the building materials and home furnishings sector—characterized by numerous product categories, rapid innovation, and fluctuating market demands—it is essential to have an authoritative and scientifically-based industry report. In response, the China Building Decoration Association Materials Committee conducted extensive research and compiled the *2013 China Building Materials and Home Industry Development Report*. After more than six months of dedicated work, supported by government agencies, industry organizations, and professionals, the report was completed and made available to the public. In 2014, the building materials and home industry is expected to exceed 400 billion yuan in scale. The 2013 report includes sections such as the *General Report*, *Special Report*, *Memorabilia*, and various data charts. It not only provides an overview of the industry's development in 2013 but also analyzes future trends based on broader economic and social changes. The *General Report* highlights key developments and challenges faced by the industry, while the *Special Report* focuses on critical issues in sectors like furniture, ceramics, lighting, and smart homes. The *Memorabilia* section summarizes major events from 2013. The report also identifies four main characteristics of the industry’s current state. First, the industry continues to grow in scale. In 2013, the total market size reached 3.724 trillion yuan, with specific segments including furniture (680 billion), wood-based panels (495.32 billion), ceramics (432.2 billion), doors and windows (364 billion), stone (347.7 billion), hardware (271.03 billion), kitchen and bathroom products (255 billion), accessories (105 billion), plastic pipes (92.52 billion), flooring (70 billion), home accessories (58.6 billion), and smart homes (10 billion). The report forecasts that the market will reach 4.071 trillion yuan in 2014. Second, the industrial structure is constantly evolving and upgrading. According to the survey, 22.6% of enterprises engage in two business areas, while 54.2% operate across four or more categories. This reflects a trend toward deeper market penetration and more specialized division of labor. Third, industrial clusters are forming, and regional shifts are accelerating. Top provinces like Guangdong, Zhejiang, Fujian, and Jiangsu account for 80% of the national market. Over 100 industry clusters now exist, each with its own unique characteristics and competitive strength. Fourth, there is a growing shortage of skilled and cross-disciplinary talent. 89% of companies identify a lack of high-end talent as their biggest challenge. Demand for senior technicians, marketing professionals, R&D experts, and managers stands at 68%, 55%, 42%, and 21% respectively. The shortage of these talents is expected to worsen over the next five years.
