In the past few years, 3D printing technology has blossomed throughout the automotive industry. More and more car manufacturers, regardless of size, are beginning to apply 3D printing to their design departments and production plants. The most striking of these is that Local Motors is publicly 3D printing a complete car in Chicago.

In the latest issue of Aston Martin, the world's top sports car manufacturer published an article exploring the many revolutionary changes that 3D printing technology has brought to their companies. At the same time as this article was published, Aston Martin also printed a very beautiful badge in 3D with the inscription "Everything Is Possible".

This very impressive badge was created by Canadian designer and text artist Ben Johnston. The design of the entire badge is very complex, representing the many advantages and possibilities that 3D printing brings to automotive designers. Moreover, this cumbersome work is also in line with the luxury style of Aston Martin.

As Johnston describes on his blog, he designed this badge to be very luxurious and complex, to highlight the power and advancement of 3D printing technology. The CAD design has been modified several times, and finally the 3D printer is printed using PLA material using the Makerbot Replicator 2 3D printer.

This article by Aston Martin also highlights the possibilities that 3D printing brings to innovation in the automotive industry. The author of the article also talked with Aston Martin's design director, Marek Reichman, about the greater space that modern manufacturing technology brings to automotive design. As the author of the article puts it: “These cutting-edge technologies – 3D printing, rapid prototyping and rapid manufacturing – are increasingly changing the way Aston Martin designs and manufactures.”

Especially in the field of design, 3D printing has the most obvious advantages in conceptual design and prototyping. Compared with the traditional method, it requires only a very small part of time and cost. Marek Reichman even believes that "3D printing has become an integral part of our work - it has become one of the most basic tools in modern car design."

Therefore, the company also used 3D printing technology on the Aston Martin CC100 Speedster, which was designed and manufactured in 2013 to commemorate the 100th birthday. “Without 3D printing, we can't turn it from a sketch into reality in just half a year.”
