A recent study conducted in Norway has revealed that older men who exercise for 30 minutes a day, six days a week, have a 40% lower risk of death compared to their sedentary counterparts—often referred to as the "soap potato chip family." This finding highlights the powerful impact of regular physical activity on longevity, even among the elderly.
The research, which began in 1972 and continued through 1973, involved 15,000 men born between 1923 and 1932. These participants underwent comprehensive physical exams and provided detailed lifestyle information. By 2000, when researchers revisited the group, 12,700 individuals were still alive. Of those, 5,700 agreed to continue in the study. By 2011, only 3,600 of them remained, but even among these seniors, the long-term benefits of consistent exercise were evident.
The study’s lead researcher, Professor Holm from the Norwegian Academy of Sports Science, published findings in the *British Journal of Sports Medicine* in May. He emphasized that engaging in moderate exercise for 30 minutes a day, six times a week, was strongly associated with a 40% reduction in mortality. This benefit was observed regardless of whether the exercise was light or intense. Moreover, the research showed that elderly individuals who maintained an active lifestyle, including regular heavy exercise, lived significantly longer than those who remained sedentary.
These results suggest that it's never too late to start exercising. Even for those in their 70s or 80s, maintaining a consistent workout routine can make a meaningful difference in life expectancy and overall health. The study serves as a strong reminder that physical activity is one of the most effective ways to improve quality of life and reduce the risk of early death.
