The basic way of color management in Photoshop (1)

Color management is not just a digital drafting system, there are many links. To put it simply, color management is in addition to Soft Proofing and Digital Proofing ...

Printing processes with different color gamuts (such as different papers) or printer color reproduction (Reproduction) should be as close as possible to make the color separation effect better. Since different printing or printing processes have different color gamuts, we should make the best use of the color gamut of this process to achieve the best results. Therefore, the advantage of using Spectral Data (usually LAB data) to select colors during desktop publishing is to maintain a Device Independent color gamut. As long as our printing process or the color gamut of the printer can cover this Lab Data color, we can accurately reproduce the color.

Photoshop is an important software for publishing on the table. Almost all printed images have been modified by Photoshop. As a member of ICC, Adobe has added ICC support since Photoshop5, and now Photoshop5 has been upgraded to 6, and the color management function has also been greatly improved. Compared with Photoshop5.X, it is really a lot of progress. Let us join together now. To understanding.

1. Basic settings

At present, about 80% of the color management settings of Photoshop 6 are set in the Color Settings in the Edit menu. In this Color Settings window, you will find that Settings is at the highest position first. If you open Photoshop 6 for the first time, you will find that Settings is Web Graphics Default. Like Photoshop5's presets, Adobe presets Photoshop6 as an online image, which simply means setting the RGB Working Space to sRGB. It should be noted that the color gamut of sRGB is small, which is smaller than the colors that can be printed in the general CMYK four-color printing process. It is not enough for printing users, which affects the color separation effect in Photoshop. So after installing Photoshop6, you must change this setting.

When you press Menu next to Settings, you will find that there are ten options including Custom, which one should we use? In fact, each user should also have different settings. These ten presets are just a starting point for reference. For example, users in Europe may want to choose Europe Prepress Default as a blueprint.

So I am in Hong Kong and want to use ICC for color management 100%. How should I set it up?

First of all, you should select US Prepress Default as the blueprint, and then make changes. At the same time, the box next to Advance Mode should be selected, otherwise Photoshop 6 will not allow us to choose our own ICC profile. (see picture 1)

2. Setting of each Working Space

First of all RGB Working Space, we should choose Adobe RGB (1998) as the working color gamut of RGB images. The advantage of Adobe RGB (1998) is that the size of the color gamut is moderate, which is larger than the color gamut of general CMYK printing. The printing color gamut can be used as much as possible, so it has been widely accepted as a standard before printing.

CMYK Working Space should choose the ICC Profile we print or draft. This sets how large the working color gamut of the CMYK image is, and also affects the effect of Soft Proofing in the display. Therefore, we should choose the corresponding glossy paper or newspaper ICC Profile according to the printing process of each of our images (such as glossy paper, newspaper). If users want to reuse the CMYK settings of Photoshop4 or Photoshop5, you can select Custom CMYK Dot Gain setting of the ink, of course, the color displayed on the monitor will not be as accurate as using the ICC Profile!
