The recent news on furniture quality inspections has made headlines in various newspapers, sparking a wave of concern within the furniture industry. A comprehensive review of multiple quality checks reveals that numerous issues persist in China's furniture market. For instance, the overall pass rate for furniture is relatively low, with children's furniture showing particularly high failure rates. Additionally, even high-end wooden furniture does not always guarantee superior quality.
In a recent inspection in Shanghai, 42 batches of mid-to-high-grade wooden and composite furniture were tested, and half of them failed to meet standards, resulting in a 50% failure rate. The problems included issues such as resistance to cigarette burns, inconsistencies in labeling, and poor craftsmanship. Some products also emitted excessive levels of formaldehyde. Notably, several well-known brands, including Dynasty, Jianwei, Aideer, Aishe, and Farang, were found to haveä¸åˆæ ¼ (non-compliant) products.
Contrary to expectations, high-end wooden furniture is not always "premium." Many products fail to match the wood names and material proportions stated on labels. For example, some furniture labeled as using red-winged wood actually contains wood-based panels mixed in. Others claimed to use walnut eucalyptus but were found to contain inferior wood types. According to industry standards, the wood names and materials used in furniture must be consistent with what is clearly marked on product labels and instructions.
Children's furniture is another major concern. Although overall product safety has improved significantly over the years—national inspection pass rates rose from 69.8% in 1994 to 92.3% in 2014—there are still gaps compared to advanced countries. In the past three years, the pass rate for children's furniture, which directly affects child safety, was only around 58%, much lower than other products like mobile phones (71%) and fluorescent lamps (72%).
As these quality issues become more visible, consumers are becoming increasingly aware of furniture quality. This has shaken trust in the industry, prompting buyers to be more cautious when purchasing home goods. The exposure of quality problems in well-known brands has also had a serious impact on their reputations. Consumers are now more rational when it comes to brand purchases, and this shift is pushing companies to focus on product quality rather than just marketing. After all, building a strong brand takes years of effort, while one misstep can damage it in an instant.
