British 12-year-old boy sends a teddy bear to space with an ammonia balloon

On June 26, 2015, in Bromsgrove, UK, a group of three young and one adult enthusiasts embarked on an extraordinary adventure. Dylan, a 12-year-old, Oscar Rees, a 9-year-old, and their father Oliver set out to send their beloved teddy bears into the sky as part of a major space research initiative. The project, which involved sending a one-kilogram payload over 80,000 miles into the atmosphere, was one of six key space experiments conducted by students. Using a series of ammonia balloons as lift, the team carefully prepared the equipment. They attached a camera and a mobile phone to track the flight path, while a make-up mirror and an insulated bag were used to protect the camera from freezing temperatures at high altitudes. This creative and low-cost approach demonstrated how passion and ingenuity could bring scientific exploration to life. The event not only captured the imagination of local communities but also inspired many young people to pursue interests in science and space technology. It was a testament to what can be achieved with determination, teamwork, and a little bit of creativity.
