According to recent filings with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, China Investment Corporation sold another $ 125 million worth of Morgan Stanley shares. The company has cut its Morgan Stanley shares in the past week and sold 9.8 million shares worth about $ 264 million.
It is not entirely clear why the company reduced its holdings, or whether the holdings were profit or loss. Some analysts pointed out that CIC may be trying to reduce its shareholding ratio to below 10% to avoid being required to disclose more information in accordance with US regulatory requirements.
The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) documents show that CIC completed a reduction in several transactions last week. Data show that CIC still holds about 166.5 million shares of Morgan Stanley, accounting for about 11.9% of the latter's total shares.
The document also shows that CIC's convertible equity bonds held by Morgan Stanley can be converted into up to 116 million shares of Morgan Stanley common stock before the August 17 deadline.
CIC was founded in late 2007 and has been actively investing globally since its creation, but like other Asian sovereign wealth funds, it suffered losses due to some early investments in the US financial industry.
For the first time in 2007, CIC bought a 9.86% stake in Morgan Stanley for US $ 5.6 billion.
The documents show that CIC sold 4.5 million shares of Morgan Stanley on July 21, 580,000 shares on the 22nd, 1.9 million shares on the 23rd, and another 2.8 million shares on the 26th. The average transaction price was $ 27.04 to $ 27.17 per share.
