Nearly 70% of consumers prefer paper food packaging

According to a recent survey conducted by YouGov, a well-known market research agency in China, 7,076 consumers were asked about their preferences regarding food packaging. Out of these, 4,857 participants indicated that fresh foods and produce displayed on shelves or stored in containers significantly influenced their purchasing decisions. The survey also explored consumer preferences between plastic and paper packaging. Among the 4,857 respondents, 68% expressed a preference for paper packaging, while 32% favored plastic. When asked if they would choose between identical products in either paper or plastic packaging, 41% said they didn’t care about the material used, with some admitting they weren’t fully aware of the differences. However, the remaining 59% showed a clear preference: 85% of them were more inclined to buy products wrapped in paper. The survey was carried out across several European countries, including Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, and Spain. These findings align closely with a similar study conducted in the UK in 2014, where 1,114 consumers were asked about their packaging preferences. A staggering 93% of them chose paper as their preferred packaging material. Industry experts believe that these results highlight a growing trend among European consumers who are increasingly looking for convenient, visually appealing, and environmentally friendly packaging solutions. Corrugated paper packaging has become a favorite due to its sustainability and ease of use. The survey once again confirms that when it comes to fresh produce, consumers tend to favor paper-wrapped items over those in plastic containers. This shift reflects a broader movement toward eco-conscious consumption and a desire for packaging that not only protects the product but also resonates with modern values. As more consumers become aware of environmental issues, the demand for sustainable options like paper packaging is expected to rise even further.
