Shanghai: Chinese Academy of Sciences laboratory open to the public

In the past few days, in conjunction with the 10th Public Science Day of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, more than 10 research institutes of the Shanghai Branch of the Chinese Academy of Sciences have combined their own characteristics to open up the world-class large-scale scientific research infrastructure to the public.

"Shenguang II" high-power laser device, the national key laboratory of strong field laser physics, is the "home-thinking" of the Institute of Optics and Precision Mechanics of the Shanghai Branch of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. On this year's Open Day, they invited more than 200 students from the privately-run children's school to explore. Through the laboratory corridor, the students witnessed the wonderful lasers that are difficult to see in daily life. The graduates of science and technology from the Chinese Academy of Sciences from different provinces and cities have told their students about their technological dreams and struggles.

Qu Wei, director of the Office of the Optics and Mechanics Institute, said that in the past few years, the Open Day activities were mainly aimed at key high school students. This year, for the first time, we tried to broaden the target of the visit so that the group of children with relatively weak educational resources can participate. In the future, more and more popular science activities will be organized to normalize this meaningful science communication.

The Open Day of the Institute of Technical Physics focuses on the development of scientific hands-on skills. Under the guidance of the researcher's tutor, the visitors were divided into four groups and participated in micro-scientific experiments designed by experimental equipment such as molecular beam epitaxy equipment, scanning electron microscopy, scanning probe microscopy and ferroelectric thin film infrared detection imaging system. These experimental equipment are expensive and the most expensive is 9 million yuan.

The Institute of Medicine invites middle school students to “close contact” with millions of scientific experimental devices, and its open day focuses on inspiration for scientific issues. Xu Xiaoping, the person in charge of the activity, said that hands-on experiments can enhance people's interest in science, and proposing scientific questions and inspiring answers to answers can help cultivate scientific thinking.

The Protein Science Research (Shanghai) facility under construction in Zhangjiang is the first comprehensive national-level scientific infrastructure in China's life sciences. Taking the opening day as an opportunity, the total investment of 700 million yuan, the "super lab" with more than 1,000 large-scale scientific instruments also opened the door for the first time to welcome visitors.

"It is our wish and our responsibility to open the world-class large-scale scientific research infrastructure to the public." Lei Ming, director of the National Protein Science (Shanghai) Research Center, said that the scientific literacy of the Chinese people still exists compared with some developed countries. Small gaps invite the public to visit lesser-known laboratories. Popularizing popular science knowledge and disseminating scientific concepts is not the most important. It may be more valuable to feel scientific charm, learn the spirit of scientists, and improve their scientific literacy.

It is understood that after the launch of the 10th Public Science Day of the Chinese Academy of Sciences on May 17, many research institutes such as the Shanghai Institute of Advanced Studies, the Shanghai Astronomical Observatory, and the Shanghai Institute of Microsystems and Information Technology have also organized various special science activities.
