Application of "Bide" burner in aluminum and aluminum alloy holding furnace

**Application of Baide Burner in Aluminum and Aluminum Alloy Holding Furnace** *By Liu Min, Luoyang Nonferrous Metals Processing Design and Research Institute, 471039; Suzhou Xinchangguang Industrial Furnace Co., Ltd., 215008* The Baide burner has been widely applied in the boiler industry and has recently gained popularity in the aluminum processing sector. This paper explores its use in aluminum and aluminum alloy holding furnaces, aiming to promote its broader application in the aluminum industry by analyzing its performance and benefits. In recent years, with rising electricity costs, many aluminum plants have shifted from electric heating systems to fuel-based ones such as light oil, natural gas, or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). These furnaces—such as soaking, holding, and aging furnaces—require low heating capacity, high temperature control accuracy, and advanced automation. Domestic burners often fail to meet these demands, while the Italian-made Baide burners offer a more suitable solution due to their high level of automation, ease of control, and reliable ignition systems. Baide burners come in different types based on fuel: single-fuel (light oil, natural gas, LPG), dual-fuel (light oil + gas), and can operate in various modes such as single-stage, two-stage, or progressive combustion. For example, a 15-ton holding furnace at Grandis Shanghai Aluminum Co., Ltd. uses a two-stage light oil burner, which successfully meets the operational requirements after on-site commissioning. The Baide burner features an internal oil pump and fan, along with two nozzles for small and large flame stages. During operation, the system first pre-sweeps the furnace, then ignites the fuel using an electric spark. The damper adjusts automatically based on the fire stage, ensuring stable combustion. It also includes a sophisticated control system that manages purge, ignition, and flame detection, and automatically locks the burner if any fault occurs. In terms of temperature control, the Baide burner offers high precision, reaching ±3°C, which is far superior to traditional resistance band heating systems. This allows for accurate temperature regulation in holding furnaces, improving product quality and reducing manual intervention. Workers only need to set the desired temperature, and the system handles the rest, greatly simplifying operations and enhancing working conditions. In oven processes, the Baide burner provides excellent temperature control, especially during low-temperature phases. Its adjustable nozzle design enables precise heat input, ensuring consistent temperature profiles across different insulation stages. Compared to wood-fired ovens, it reduces labor intensity, minimizes temperature fluctuations, and avoids black smoke from incomplete combustion. During commissioning, challenges such as overheating and reverse gas flow were addressed through modifications to the control circuit, including keeping the fan running after shutdown to cool critical components. Additionally, oil circuit maintenance was improved with filters and proper return lines to prevent pump damage. Overall, the Baide burner demonstrates significant advantages in automation and temperature control, making it a valuable tool for modern aluminum production. While some issues remain, its performance highlights its potential as a next-generation burner for holding furnaces. Future improvements should focus on enhancing its reliability and integrating additional safety measures to further optimize its use in industrial settings.
