German manufacturers respected self-cleaning plastic doors and windows

Recently, some German door and window frame manufacturers are developing in depth the self-cleaning technology of plastic window frames. Several vinyl polymer door and window frames with the first cleaning function will be put into the market by the end of this year or early 2004.
In 2002, Gilland Windows and Doors Company in Germany started to study in depth the PVC polymer window frames cleaned with rainwater. Together with the German Surface Modification Institute, it has developed a surface with a micro-structured coating that reduces the attachment of dust particles to the product surface, which has a self-cleaning effect and thus avoids regular cleaning. By adding a waterproof material, the raindrops can remain spherical in shape from the air to the surface of the door and window frame, instead of being flatly glued to the surface of the door and window frame, so that the raindrops can carry away the dust when they roll off. Currently, the product is still in the R&D stage, and such products of Gilland are expected to be put on the market during the year, but the price has not yet been finalized.
Gilland's competitor is German Dekai. Deke is a famous company with more than 40 years of experience specializing in the production of various plastic products. Its "Zhuogao" trademark is one of the world famous building materials brands. A year ago, the company was experimenting with a nanostructure capable of self-cleaning the surface of doors and windows, and Dekke is expected to bring this product to market in 2004. It is understood that its product contains an extrusion coating of titanium dioxide nanoparticles, which provides the cleaning function under the combined action of ultraviolet and moisture. The company has developed a titanium dioxide nanoparticle formulation together with an undisclosed partner, but the specific data on titanium dioxide nanoparticles is still in secrecy.
The electrons generated by the UV-excited nanoparticles can activate the dust on the surface of the nanoparticles to form peroxides and oxides. This will help prevent the dust from binding with the vinyl polymer, making the dust easily slippery and thus providing a cleaning effect. Wolfgang Frings, Deka's engineering development manager, said that the test results showed that normal sunlight and even cloudy weather can provide enough activation to stimulate cleaning. But this must have the effect of moisture in the form of moisture or dew to work together. Surface systems that use self-cleaning effects require rain assistance for cleaning. In this way, the part of the surface of the window frame under the eaves may not be self-cleaning due to lack of sufficient rainwater. Deke said that the life of the photocatalyst-based surface system used by the company is basically the same as the service life of the window frames, ie 20 to 50 years. The company has not yet priced this door and window frame product.
At the same time, polymer manufacturer Masaf has also developed a spray waterproof film that can simulate self-cleaning effects and is suitable for mural protection. The sprayed film is based on polypropylene, polyethylene and paraffin nanoparticles designed for use on rough surfaces such as walls, but if used to adhere to PVC windows and doors, there may be problems that need further investigation.
