Online 3D model library Sketchfab provides virtual reality browsing

This morning, I visited Van Gogh's home. The small bedroom with blue walls is intact, so I almost feel that Van Gogh will return here in minutes. The sun shines through the open windows, warming the wooden floors and bright red bedspreads. You may laugh at me: Are you dreaming? This is not true! This is Van Gogh's famous painting "Bedroom in Arles"!

No, this is not a dream, this is virtual reality (VR), it comes from Sketchfab. Recently, the well-known 3D model sharing site has added a virtual reality button to its interface, allowing visitors to browse its huge 3D model library in a completely new way. Prior to this, Sketchfab users had been able to navigate the object or the entire scene from all angles with the aid of mouse navigation. But now Sketchfab goes one step further, allowing users to walk around the virtual space, and what he/she needs to do is just click the button.

Of course, to experience 3D models in virtual reality, you also need a virtual reality headset, Sketchfab, to step up development to make the new application compatible with all major VR headsets. So far, users have been able to view it with Google Cardboard, and it will soon be compatible with Oculus devices. According to Sketchfab, the app is not yet complete, and they are still working to make navigation smoother and improve content categories and enhance the browsing experience.

This is great news for VR enthusiasts. I can even imagine that someone will spend hours hanging around in 3D forests, asteroid belts and castles. But the use of this technology can be more than just entertainment. A few weeks ago, doctors used Sketchfab's virtual reality settings and Google Cardboard to save babies with rare birth defects. So far, we have introduced many application cases of 3D printing in the medical field, but virtual reality has also begun to catch up and become one of the most important technologies affecting medicine.

Of course, despite this, it is undeniable that virtual reality is really fun, and what Sketchfab is doing is trying to make it as convenient as possible.

"We have two goals." The company claims. “One is the easiest way for everyone to create 3D content and publish it in VR; the second is to provide a huge interactive library of content for all VR device owners to explore.”
