The European Union announced last week that it will gradually eliminate phosphates in laundry detergents within a year to achieve the purpose of purifying water bodies such as rivers, lakes and oceans within the EU.
A report by the European Commission said the purpose of the ban was to reduce the phosphate content in wastewater. When phosphate-containing wastewater is discharged into water bodies, phosphate can cause algae to multiply and affect the growth of other aquatic organisms. This phenomenon is often referred to as "red tide" or "green tide", and scientists call this phenomenon "eutrophication."
The ban will be implemented from January 2013. However, the ban does not include automatic dishwashers or detergents used by professionals. This is mainly because, at present, there are no technically and economically viable alternative products in these two fields in the EU. Phosphorus-free lotions "will ensure that EU citizens benefit from improved water quality," said Antonio Tajani, EU commissioner for industry.
Half a century ago, phosphate was widely used, mainly because it softens hard water and helps suspend dirt. However, once phosphate is discharged into the wastewater system, it is difficult to be decomposed and the treatment cost is extremely high.
EU experts said that 60% of phosphate pollution is caused by laundry liquid, 30% is caused by dishwashing liquid, and another 8% is caused by industrial emissions.
16% of the phosphate in the Danube and 24% of the phosphate in the Baltic Sea are caused by detergents.
Some EU member states have begun to attack the phosphate ban. This measure may re-innovate the member countries of Eastern Europe, especially small and medium-sized producers in these countries.
