Plastic tank developed by German KTSN company won Innovation Award

Not long ago, KTSN in Germany won the Special Award for Engineering Innovation awarded by the Society of Plastic Engineers (SPE). KTSN developed the world's first truck engine tank made of thermoplastic material. Many of the staff involved in the project were engineers from BASF. Their expertise in plastics engineering and design made a significant contribution to the successful development of fuel tanks. The material used for this tank is also BASF Ultramid nylon resin.
The award-winning fuel tank was injection moulded with Ultramid A3HG7, BASF's 35% glass-reinforced nylon resin. Acoustically speaking, the tank is 1 dB less than the noise of the metal tank. It can also pack 30% more gasoline, which increases the oil change interval by half and is half that of an aluminum fuel tank. The fuel tank will be part of the Mercedes-Benz Actros truck's new series of V6 engines, which Mercedes-Benz plans to produce for at least 20 years.
Its injection molds are produced by Hauser Presswerkzeugbau Grodubra GmbH and the production of 30 tons of molds is no easy task. The mold is very complex and has multiple slides to match the undercuts of the tank structure. The part was injection molded 6kg at a single entrance. So good melt flow of Ultramid A3HG7 is very important. Because the tank is located close to the wheel, it must be strong enough to withstand the impact from the rock. The limit tests of this application demonstrate that the material can withstand hot oil and heat aging, and the polymer can continuously withstand hot oil contact at 120°C and temperatures up to 150°C.
