The Future of Digital Proofing (I)

I. Introduction Currently, the digitalization of the text layout and color graphics workflow has been popularized in various departments of printing and publishing. However, no matter how advanced the plate making process and equipment are used in the front end, the proofing process remains in the entire digital workflow. Keep the traditional offset printing proofing process. Over the past few years, in addition to book and book printing plants, output centers, publishing houses, and advertising companies have established their own typesetting or plate-making prepress systems. Through practice, they have realized the benefits of digital workflows, but prepress Proofing a link still depends on traditional proofing, which is costly and unable to get proofs in a timely manner. The problem of plate printing in color newspapers is even more acute. The time between the completion of newspaper layout editing and the start of printing on the machine is very urgent. In fact, it is impossible to use traditional offset printing to proof the design. When it is necessary, it is only necessary to abandon the color proofing process in order to ensure timely delivery. It often results in some mistakes that could have been avoided.
At present, CTP (direct plate making) technology is being sought in China for promotion. CTP is not used for film. It cannot use traditional offset printing and can only use digital proofing. In spite of this, there are still many problems in the current digital proofing technology, promotion and application, which makes the printing department difficult to accept at the moment. In short, digital proofing has become an important issue that must be solved in the current development and promotion of new printing technologies. The United States Printing Technology Foundation GATF, in the prediction of printing and publishing major projects at the beginning of the year, also solved the color prepress proofing in second place, second only to CTP technology.
Second, why is digital proofing not easy to promote? The printing industry needs digital proofing and new technologies, and it will naturally demand digital proofing with the traditional offset printing features that have been familiar for years, especially domestic book printing. The factory more specifically requested that digital proofing should have traditional halftone amplitude modulation nets, requiring that digital proofs be accurately matched with the color of the finished product, to achieve the same level of quality, and that this basic requirement cannot be met. It is difficult to accept digital proofing.
In fact, the development of digital proofing technology began in the 1980s after the advent of the CEPS, a color electronic prepress system. It was not a concern for prepress workers to provide a digital proofing proof before the separation film was imaged. At DRUPA 90, APPROVAL from Kodak and DIGITAL MATCHPRINT from 3M are just such products. Although these two products do not accurately represent the dots that are formed on film, they all satisfy the requirement for halftone dots. However, because these two products can only produce 2 A2 size proofs per hour, and the price is as high as 250,000 US dollars, it cannot be accepted by users. As a result, the analog DuPont Cromax proofing is still acceptable proofing standards for some foreign printers, advertisers, and prepress companies.
The cheaper alternatives to Kodak's APPROVAL and 3M's DIGITAL MATCHPRINT are thermal transfer systems, such as 3M's RAINBOW and DuPont's 4CAST, but they are all continuous proofing and the system is cheaper but more expensive.
The biggest winner in the digital proofing system's competitors is undoubtedly Sage Angel's IRIS GRAPHICS. Sai Angel has developed an inkjet technology that can output continuous proofing proofs such as photo quality, and supplies are less expensive. IRIS proofing has become an industry standard product in the 1990s. IRIS GRAPHICS sold about 10,000 units worldwide, accounting for about 90% of the market. In the near 10 opinion, no other company has been able to take a share of the IRIS proofing system market. Although Fujifilm and Polaroid introduced their digital proofing machines with dot generators at DRUPA 95, they did not slow down the sales of IRIS. Both PRESSTEK and Creo also introduced new thermal transfer proofing, but people in the market doubted whether their products had an advantage.
Only today, the rivals that have shaken the dominant position of IRIS have emerged. These competitors can provide surprisingly cheap prices. These competitors are Canon, Epson and Hewlett-Packard. Their inkjet printers can produce professional-level sample products at the lowest cost.
Many developers are optimistic about the market prospects of digital proofing. They have invested a lot of effort in developing new products. However, there are also many difficulties. For example, if you use traditional AM sites, the system price is very high. Therefore, digital proofing mostly uses FM outlets. High-quality products can be obtained on low-resolution output devices. In spite of this, printing plant users do not like the new type of FM network outlets. First, books and periodicals printing factories have already set up traditional offset printing proofing. Second, the adoption of FM outlets also requires changing some traditional habits, re-learning and mastering new technologies ( In view of the superiority of the FM network itself, it is necessary for printers to learn to master new technologies for FM sites. To achieve accurate color matching, it is more difficult, which requires the development of a superior color management system (CMS).
Digital proofing reflects many relevant new technologies. On the one hand, development vendors have not yet been able to develop good products that can be used. On the other hand, for China's current printing plants, in order to make CMS applications in practice, it is necessary to have corresponding The technical conditions and capabilities, and to change the traditional habits and processes.
The above-mentioned various subjective and objective factors make it difficult to promote digital proofing. However, with the continuous development of technology, people’s level of thinking and understanding has been continuously improved. Especially in foreign countries, the above-mentioned difficulties have been basically solved. New products with complete functions and low prices continue to emerge, and digital proofing will inevitably be widely promoted. application.
According to information, traditional analog proofing is declining in some areas of Europe and the United States, and digital proofing has changed with the promotion and application of CTP and the printing industry environment, and is growing at an average annual rate of 18%. (The previous paragraph is added to this publication)
Third, the use of FM network outlets is a trend for the use of AM outlets for color printing, some foreign experts believe that not necessarily non-halftone AM outlets are not available, they suggest that offset printing was originally evolved from lithographic, and lithography is not the network (continuous Adjust printing; today's FM screening can also print continuous offset printing. Looking back at the end of the 808s, German scientists invented FM screening. When the function of the computer allowed it to be used before printing, a German prepress company adopted the technology and sold the license to Agfa. The company called it "Crystal Network" and immediately triggered a worldwide wave. Each POSTscript phototypesetter manufacturer also had to develop its own technology for FM screening. The result is exciting: it is feasible to continuously call gravure on offset printing, continuous tone-adjusting wind-up printing on paper is successful, and saturated color images are printed, which is no worse than gravure in quality.
Some foreign industry sources believe that many printing plants are equipped with direct plate-making machines. Data are provided by prepress companies without web form. They are input to the plate-making machine and are screen-printed in this process. Therefore, offset printing uses FM. The network has at least six advantages: Image quality is improved, moire disappears, proofing becomes cheaper, printing quality is better, digital files are reduced, and data transmission is significantly faster and cheaper. These people insist that the actual effect of printing makes the above statement about FM screen printing more effective. They firmly believe that FM screening will be further promoted and applied. Adhering to the requirement for halftone AM screening and printing is lagging behind. They call for: Let us forget halftone AM outlets! (To be continued)
