How to get a 5 year old wear an eyepatch

I was a little anxious a few weeks ago. Rose had her eye exam after wearing glasses for three months, and the doctor mentioned that if there wasn’t enough improvement, she might need to wear an eye patch. We had already discussed it with her, and she was pretty positive about it. Still, I knew the reality might not be as easy as it sounded. My main worry was that she has a real fear of stickers and refuses to wear them—even hates it when I have one on my clothes. But I didn’t need to worry. When she came back from the appointment, she proudly wore her eye patch. She needs to wear it for three hours each day to help her left eye work harder by covering her good eye. We were given a small box of colorful patches and a larger box of plain ones, along with a chart to mark after each use. We also bought a felt patch that slips over her glasses in case she doesn’t want to wear one. Most days, she’s happy to put it on, but I thought some extra encouragement would help on the days she wasn’t in the mood. So I decorated a few of the plain patches with her favorite characters, and she became much more excited to wear them. The first one had to be Minions—she’s a huge fan, so that was a must. Then, since the girls love *The Gruffalo* from Reception, I drew a Gruffalo design for her to wear at school. The twins both adore Shopkins, so they picked a cute Shopkin for the next patch. We went to Legoland Windsor this week, so I made a LEGO-themed patch for the trip. I used Sharpies to draw these designs, which turned out bold and fun. Rose wanted Tinkerbell on her patch, but I thought that might be too tricky, so she chose a Disney castle instead. It had to be yellow because that’s her favorite color. So, how do you get a 5-year-old to wear an eye patch? Put a Minion on it, of course.
