Bruce Peterson is Wal-Mart's senior vice president and general manager of perishable products. He is responsible for monitoring the procurement of meat, farm products, cheese, frozen products, cakes, and bread in Wal-Mart products and nearby supermarkets. OBM: In terms of receiving agricultural products, what is the significant advantage of Wal-Mart's discovery of RPC compared to corrugated products?
BP: RPC is the earliest standardized transport material. We started talking about agricultural products. This is my old business. You have about 469 carton products of different sizes, especially corrugated manufacturers customizing one carton for each item they ship. Five years ago, an RPC European company began to contact us and they only had 5 types of boxes.
In general, European agricultural products and other commodities are not shipped on very standard footprints. So first you have to ask yourself if the standard box is right for you. Second, if you think that the standard box is a good thing, what is the standard? Third, RPC not only has these standards, but also displays-ready.
For industrial products, the box (carton) has a top cover and a bottom plate. Opening the lid allows you to unpack the various products. With RPC, you can display directly, so it is ideal. As an important type of RPC, there are other features of the standard plastic box for display that make it very beneficial to the final transportation/cultivation. BP: RPC has handles that meet the artificial mechanics considerations; there are internal locking devices so they do not slip. These devices were originally there, and I want to understand how important they are. Traditional box manufacturers will go to agricultural producers (farmers) to ask: "What do you need?" OBM: Do you think that the advantages of RPC come mainly from its plastic Materials, consistent footprint/size or returnability?
BP: If you look at the box itself from the standpoint of standards, display, and materials, RPC becomes very desirable; if you look at the box as a medium, it begins to have the standards and characteristics of the goods. In the pre-cooling process, the corrugated box cooling time will be longer; but after the temperature is reached, the insulation performance is better. There are also weight considerations. In this regard, we have done a lot of work with the FBA (Carbon Carton Association) to let them understand that we are not trying to confront them.
The unity of stacking is self-evident. In a distribution center there are a large number of goods from different manufacturers. If I have a batch of half-packed lettuce, the box size is the same and it is the same as other commodity packaging boxes, and it is stored in the warehouse. When you sent someone to pick up the goods, you discovered that half a box of lettuce was not piled together, but a box of lettuce, a box of apples, a box of bananas, etc., all mixed together.
